Yes use a textbox. You could also use a graphics editing program and then re
import but text box is best.
 
Another workaround here, where you will be able to animate the text together
with the picture. Also, the text will be displayed in the custom animation.

To do so, you will need to follow the tutorial here,

Next, right click on the picture/autoshape, click edit text.
You can then align it so as to move the text out of the autoshape.
