How do I add a file description to online web folder file lists?

I have set up a directory in my front page web which is full of data files
(MS Word files). I have a hyperlink in my working website pointing to this
directory so that the user can click on it to view the contents of the data
directory and can subsequently click on a file on the file list to load it on
his or her local machine.

However, the file names are quite long and so are being truncated. Their is
provision for a description field that would be long enough to give files a
meaningful description for the user but I don't know how to set it.

I have tried altering properties of the word files but to no effect. When
the hyperlink to the data directory is clicked and the file list appears, it
continously just displays the file name, last modified date, and file size
but no description.

How do I set the description?

I appreciate any help you can give me in this regard.

Doesn't applied to the files when stored on the web.

Why not make the hyperlinks to each file be the description?

Because there is no page, just a directory listing.
