how do I add a connection site to a drawing?

A typical shape only has four "connection sites, the points that connectors
automatically connect to. I would like several arrows, for example, coming
out of a shape such as a rectangle in several places along the same side.

Can I do this withoug adding a bunch of additiona "hidden" shapes?

One trick is to use the Freeform tool to draw the shape you want, but add extra
points; each point becomes a snap-point for connectors.
