A colleague, who also uses Word and Endnote, the bibliographic reference
programme, has in the in the top menu line of Word a whole set of symbols
linking it with
Endnote. The Office 2003 Student and Teacher Edition Office programme, which
I purchased recently and from which I obtained the Word programme, does not
seem to have any such symbols. How can I join the Word and Endnote programmes
in such a way as to avoid having to cut and paste references from Endnote to
a Word document as I write?

This will be a feature of Endnote, so the place to look is in the Endnote
documentation or support forum. I don't know how Endnote actually does it,
but the usual way for a third-party application to add things to Word's
menus and toolbars is via an add-in. If you installed Endnote before you
installed Word, Endnote's installation won't have known to put this add-in
in place.

On your colleague's machine, check Templates and Add-ins (on Word's Tools
menu) - see what's listed. Add-ins are .dot files stored in Word's Start-up
folder (check Tools > Options > FileNames for the location). You will likely
find that your colleague has an add-in called something like EndNote.dot,
which is either missing from your computer or stored in the wrong place. It
might be sufficient to copy it; otherwise try re-installing Endnote.

Dear Post and the two respondents to my query,
This is the first time I have used this Microsoft service/discussion group.
The responses were prompt, and exactly what I needed. Just brilliant.
Many thanks,

I installed EndNote 6 with my copy of Word 2003 in Office 2003 and had no end
of troubles. I had to write a long paper and had 112 references in EndNote so
had to go on, regardless, but Word crashed repeatedly and it was almost
impossible to close and open files properly.

This is definitiely not a problem for Word. I updated EndNote with the
fdiles from their website and followed their direction and had the icon bar
for EndNote (eventually).

My advice would be to avoid EndNote until they have a real compatibility
with Word 2003, release 2.

Cheers,
