How did I lose a Word document while typing it?

I was typing a letter, had completed approximately 2 pages when suddenly all
I had was the last 2 or 3 lines I had typed? How did I (accidentally) lose
the rest of the document?
 
Most likely pressed Ctrl+A (Select All) by accident and overwrote it with
the next letter you typed. If you haven't closed the document, Copy the text
you've typed since then, then Undo back to the point where you overwrote the
existing text, then Paste the subsequent text over it.
