How can I update contact info without replacing or creating dupes?

I want to UPDATE info only. For instance:

If the existing info for Tom Smith lists his business number and the new
info lists his home number, I want these two to merge- not create 2 different
entries for Tom Smith.

Thank you,

Was that not coherent? Let me try slowly this time.

How can I update my contacts with new information without REPLACING old info
or making duplicates? For example, if Russ has a work phone number listed,
and I want to add another work number- how can I avoid replacing the old with
the new? I want for the program to ultimately show two work numbers for Russ.

Thank you.

Aloha B. RAORANE,

Open the Contact item for Russ, select a different phone number field and
enter the second phone number.

So, open Tom Smith's contact record and type in his home number.

Thank you. That answer siffices for one contact. What do I do if I
am importing contacts from Excel- a whole bunch of them and want them
to merge with existing contacts? ie- update existing contacts, not
replace.

What I would do, perhaps, would be to export the contacts into an file, use
Excel to merge the data, then delete my existing contacts and import the
Excel file.
