how can i unlock a new document so I may type?

Guest

I am able to open a new document, but when it is opened, there is a message
in the message bar that reads: "This modification is not allowed because the
document is locked". I do not know how to unlock this new document, I have
looked at other questions, they are similar but not the same problem. Any
Help?

Have you activated Word? See “OFFXP: About Office Activation and Reduced
Functionalityâ€
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=293151 (also applies to Office 2003).

Alternatively, see “How to convert a Office 2003 Trial Edition to a Full
Retail Editionâ€

Ok, I understand, But I do not know how to activate Word. I can get to the
screen that asks if I want to activate over phone or via internet, and the
internet cannot get a connection and when I try to do it over the phone the
installation ID does not match the confirmation code, there are 6 extra
numbers in the installation ID. What do I do know?

If you're doing it over the phone, I would think that the person you're
talking to could offer some help? It's been so long since I did this that I
don't know what the "installation ID" and "confirmation code" are.

You have either a trial version of Word which has expired or a full version
which you have not activated. Help > Activate Product.

You might like to see the following exchange on a Mesh Hexus forum:
http://forums.hexus.net/showthread.php?t=57014.
My own experience has been this:
I bought PC from Mesh in early November with MS Office Student Teacher
Trial version preinstalled. I also bought at the time of ordering the
PC the full version of MS Office Student Teacher (but as was very busy
had not actually got round to unwrapping and installing it.) Had no
problems using the trial and never had any warnings that it was about
to expire. Then all of a sudden, all Office applications have gone
into "reduced functionality mode" - cannot create new documents, edit
existing ones etc, and also when you click the Activate option on the
Help menu in any Office product absolutely nothing happens, no dialog
box whatsoever.

So, trying to second guess what would be best, I decided to uninstall
the trial version, then rebooted, and then installed the full Student
Teacher version. I definitely remember putting in my name and product
key when installing. However, no joys at all. All office applications
are more or less "view only". You cannot activate the product via the
Help menu (no wizards appear) and no activation option appeared when
installing. On the Help menu, when you click About Word .... it does
not list any name under Licensed To, but does show a product key.

I have contacted Mesh as they I feel are responsible as they configured
the system, but so far no reply. I have an awful feeling they may tell
me to put in the Recovery CD and reinstall Windows. If anyone has any
suggestions for stopping more of my hair falling out, I'd love to hear
from you!

Alternatively, you have failed to activate Word and have used up the 50 uses
you get before activating, or it is a trial version that has expired.

I just bought this computer and activated word trial offer and it worked fine
but then my son installed the new printer and now when I try to type it's
locked. I don't have a "tools" button. Anyone know what I can do to unlock
it?

Doug Robbins - Word MVP

The issue for which Herb suggested that is probably not applicable in your
case, but to get to the equivalent of the Tools, button, you will need to
click on the Office button and then on Word Options and then on Popular
(which by default will be activated anyway) and check the box for Show
Developer tab in the Ribbon. (That only has to be done once, unless you
turn it off again)

Then when you exit the dialog by clicking OK, a Developer tab will have been
added to the Ribbon and if you click on it, you will see a Protect Document
item, which is the equivalent of the Tools item to which Herb made
reference.

I doubt however that is the issue. Possibly, the trial version has expired.
