How can I tell?

How can I tell if I have a virus or something that is slowing my computer
down?

..When I run a program, I get a small delay between clicking on the icon and
the actual opening of the program. I have a Mobile Athlon XP 3000+, so I
don't think there should be _any_ delay, essentially. I have the "open
program" sound set to a click, so I can hear there's a delay.

I run Spybot, Ad-Aware, Registry First Aid, and The Ultimate Troubleshooter
out the ying-yang, and I can't see anything.

What anti-virus programme are you using? There are free programmes for
use on Home Computers!

Well, since you suspect a virus, is there any reason you tried using an
antivirus application? Ad-Aware and Spybot S&D check for adware and
spyware, but not viruses; Registry First Aid does nothing useful at all,
but is - like all automated registry cleaners - potentially dangerous.
Never heard of "The Ultimate Troubleshooter," but the very name just
screams "snake oil" to me.

Oops! The first sentence should read: "....*haven't* tried using an

It would have saved quite a bit of time if you'd included that tidbit
in your original post. Are the virus definition files up-to-date?
