When you open the symbols page on the Insert Menu what do these symbols
signify. I know some of them but there are many that I don't know what they
are for. Please let me know or tell me where I can go to find out what each
symbol represents? Thank you for any help.

If you're looking at symbols in a Unicode font, the Unicode name of the
symbol will be shown in the lower right corner of the Symbol dialog (if it's
truncated, you can get complete symbol tables at
http://unicode.org/charts/symbols.html). In symbol fonts, there will,
however, be no identification. Generally speaking, if you don't know what a
symbol means, you probably don't need to use it (and some are just
ornaments).

Select "Unicode" at the bottom of the "Insert symbol" dialog. Word will show
numbers (and maybe letters) that are symbol index. You may go to the
http://www.unicode.org/charts/ and enter that numbers into text field (at the
top of the page), press Go, in the search results download corresponding .PDF
and read about your symbol. Other pages at unicode.org may also be helpful.

You can click once on any symbol and read its name at the lower left,
just above the AutoCorrect button. That may or may not help you to
find out what it's for. Try typing the character's name into Google to
see what turns up.

Most, of course, are letters or glyphs for writing specific languages.
Some of them are symbols for writing math, so you'd need to know
something about the subject.

The more difficult problem is finding a particular symbol when you
know what you want, but not which font to look in.
