How can I stop the deleted items folder from automatically emptyin

When I delete a message from the inbox or other folder it goes to the deleted
items folder. My problem is that messages that arrive in the deleted items
folder are instantaneously emptied so I have no way of retreving a message if
I change my mind and want it back!
 
This is a setting that is easily changed.

Uncheck the box for emptying the deleted messages
