That had to be a third party application from your description and wording,
so the trick will be to identify what it was and get access to it again.
XP doesn't have any method to easily make that happen; I've never heard
of anyone doing it, at least.

Normally, a computer cannot be started simply by pressing the
<Spacebar>, as starting the computer requires the application of
electricity via the Power switch.

If you have a special keyboard whose <SpaceBar> that doubles as a Power
switch, you'll need to contact its manufacturer for assistance.

If, on the other hand, you were not really "starting" the computer with
the <Spacebar>, but simply bringing the computer out of a state of
Standby or Hibernation, you need to check to see how you've changed your
Power Options in the Control Panel.

I used to be able to do it that way too; using the standy by function,
but after doing a system restore or adding some other programs, my space
bar no longer works either, I have to momentarily hit the start button.

On a few computer I built in years gone by, pressing the space bar to start
the PC was an option in the bios.

Yes this option was put on went thy built my computer! There is no shortcut
key for that option, and it’s not a keyboard option..
Can I put this option back on now?.

Well, if you were paying attention, its not related to XP. Its an bios
option. So, what's the reference to a shortcut and stuff like that? Go to
your bios setup and find it, and enable it.
I always thought it anal, so left it as default.

Some systems have a BIOS that will listen to the keyboard for a certain key
to be pressed (such as Power) to turn on. Something that PCs got handed
down from the Mac world a few years back. BIOS settings would be where to
look for this.
