how can I register my Win2K on a used computer?

I am the fourth owner of a Dell PC with Windows 2K. The
original service tag and the Windows2K product number are
on the side of the box.

Win2K became unusable after I downloaded and installed a
Msft service pack. I have no media to reinstall Win2K.

Dell won't help me because the warranty has expired.

Is there a way to register with Microsoft as the owner of
my Win2K, and to request or purchase backup media for my
Win2K SW?

From a technical standpoint, the OS media should have been transferred
with the sale of the Dell PC. Does the previous owner still have it?

Otherwise, about the best recourse would be to buy a retail or MS OEM
copy of Windows 2000 as a replacement since Dell is no longer co-operating.
E-Bay, computer shows, large computer superstores, etc., are good sources.
Dell machines are generic enough so that nothing really proprietary is missing.
Of course, it would mean that there are now 2 licenses...but what the heck.
HTH.

what is on the box is all you need to re install, borrow and
make a copy and use the licence info on the box, it is my
understanding that the cert of authenticity and code are
what makes it legal.
