How can I recover a file once saved and erroneously overwritten?

I wrote a long article, saved it and then overwrote it, shortening it for
publication. I erroneously saved it as the original file rather than a "Save
as" new file.

Is there any way to access the auto-back-up file of the original item?
(I've since saved the "newer' version as something else).

Thanks

Use your backup copy. If under Tools > Options > Save you have always make a
backup checked, write back and I'll tell you how to find the backup. (In the
meantime, don't even open the file.) If not, check it now and start typing.

Thx, Charles.

I guess I've failed to create the backup you've described. Duh.
In retrospect it seems such an obvious thing to do. Sigh.

Is there something [yet] I may do to recover this prior file?

If not, what do you suggest I should I do to avoid this prob in the future?

Thx many bunches/d

Check the box. Word will save a backup everytime you save file within Word
that already exists. This gives you one backup. Next time you save that
file, the backup will be replaced.

The backup is stored in the same folder as the original. If your original is
named "Myfile.doc" the backup will be "Backup of MyFile.wbk." Note the
different extension.
