You should get a dialog box which asks whether you want to restart now or
later. Do you not get that?

YES, I get the frigging message and if I am not here it reboots at
will. If I am it just bugs me.

Stop being stupid and change the auto updates configuration to suit your
needs. I have mine turned off at the moment. When I have the time and
inclination to do updates, I will turn on "notify me but don't download
or install" and auto updates will have my full attention. In addition, I
use the feature that appears after the updates are downloaded when you
go to Start/Turn off Computer/Turn Off so that the updates are installed
after leaving Windows rather than in Windows where some program may
interfere with the install.

If you're talking about Auto Update, then (from Control Panel > Security
Center > Automatic Updates) set the Auto Update option to either
"Download updates for me, but let me choose when to install them," or
"Notify me but don't automatically download or install them."

Simply don't allow WinXP to update itself automatically. Instead, pick
the time when you want to install the available updates.
