How can I merge together two contact lists

I have now two contact lists in Outlook which I want to merge into one. Is
there a practical way other than export to a file and import from a file, and
if this is the way to go, when I import will I have a one merged list or just
two separate contact lists (again)?

We have no idea what you mean by contact list. Outlook uses no such term and
it could mean anything.
All Contact data resides in Contact Folders. You can easily move the
contents of one folder into another. You would never use export and import
to transfer Outlook data.
