How can I keep cell formatting when pasting from word?

When I paste data into Excel 2003, it's changing the formatting of the cells,
even locking the previously unlocked cells in some cases. How can I paste
things in while still keeping the formatting of the cell?

For example: I copied a dollar amount from word to Excel (data inside a
table rather than the whole cell) and it lost the currency rules, decimal
places, and even locked the cell so you have to unprotect the sheet to allow
changes.

Also, is there any way to keep the borders and other cosmetic formatting
from disappearing when pasting things?

Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.

Thanks. That's almost what I was looking for. I need a more direct way to
do it with fewer mouse clicks as there will be a lot of little copy-pastes on
this document. Is there a setting to make the default cell formatting hold
without having to PasteSpecial?
