How can I increase the field lengths in Access 2007

I have an Access CD collection on the previous version of Access, converted
to Access 2007 Beta.
How do I increase the field lengths. I have altered the visual windows to the
size that I need, but, I cannot enter any more text than before.
The help facility has not been helpful at all.

Open the table in design view. Change the Field Size property to a number up
to 255. If you want a longer string than that, change the data type to Memo.

I cannot find any command that lets me change the field size.
Almost everything else but not the field size.

Open the table (not report query or form) and change to design view is
it is not already there.

Then click on the field then look at the bottom of the screen and change
size to anything between 1 and 255, the number indicates the total number of
characters that can be stored in that field.

eWhen I click the icon to put the database into the computer; I get the GUI
that I had designed, with the various options that I had put in. If I then go
to design view; I get a grid of my opening page with no apparent options.
If I select the input mode of my program; I get an 'entry/view data' screen.
No matter which way I go into the design mode, I cannot find any way to alter
the field length.
Using the build in help regarding field length, the relevant help panel
tells me to press F1 to get help about the field length. The ONLY thing that
it does NOT tell me is how to alter the field length.
I build this database myself with Access 97 which I subsequently converted

to Access 2003. This is now converted to Access 2007.
It seems to me that I shall have to convert it back to Access 2003 to try
that out.

I did succedd in getting to a screen that showed me the fild lengths, but no
option or info as to how to amend.

I think I'll have to rewrite the program. What a farce!

Expecting more of a beta test version (Access 2007) than a testbed for
trying new features and finding bugs is the problem, here, possibly. You
are aware that Access 2007 is in Beta Test, I'm sure, and that _Test_ is the
operative word there.

Did you hold down the Shift key when opening the database? Even in Access
2007, it IS possible to open Tables in Design View, if the Database Window
is available. Unless you blocked it, that Shift option should work; if you
did block BYPASS KEY, then you should have saved a separate development copy
of your database, without that option.

Thank you all for your help. I shall need to get a better instruction book.
