How can I import Outlook Contacts into Busness Contacts?

Select the Contacts your want in BCM from the Outlook Contacts folder
view, and then drag them to the Business Contacts folder. If you use
the right button to drag them you'll have the option of moving or
copying them.

The only caution is that attachments and custom fields don't make it into
BCM. You can drag & drop (which removes them from outlook) or better,
CTRL+drag and drop to leave your original contacts intact. You could also
export into an excel file, then import them into BCM. Either way, custom
fields and attachments will be lost. You can manually add attachments back,
but custom fields are not supported by BCM.

To my knowledge, custome fields are supported. Business Contacts Manager is
really just a set of custom forms Microsoft designed to install into outlook.
You can use custom fields just like in Outlook but you have to add them to
the details tab yourself by choosing Tools > Forms > Design a form. Then
select Look in Personal Forms Library and choose Business Contact. Go to the
details tab of the form editor, choose your custom field out of the field
mapping box on the right, drag it on the form where you want it and then save
the form. Next time you create a new business contact you will see the new
field on the details tab.

Does everybody else get the Business Contact Manager cannot initialize this
form error on the General tab in the form editor? I can't seem to edit the
first page of the business contact form. Any help is appreciated.

Matt,

Your information was news to me since many of the posts in this discussion
group were consistent with my understanding. But, I hoped you were right,
and I still hope you are. However, I've been unable to do what you suggest.

I got excited when I was able to drag over a custom field onto the business
contact form. However, saving and publishing turned out to be a problem.

My first problem was that it would not let me save the redesigned form (save
or save as) without populating the 'Full Name' field (must have 'file as'
data). So I put some text in the name field and saved it. It saved an otf
file to 'my documents'.

I was unable to publish the form (it is dimmed on the menu bar).

Do you know how to address these problems? Unfortunately, all the posts
that i've read in this group indicate that BCM does not support any custom
fields.

Okay, good, you've got the form saved. While you have the form open in edit
mode, go to Form>run this form. When it brings the form up, you now have a
working form, if it doesn't, there is something else wrong that you'll have
to troubleshoot. Now go back to tools>forms>publish as and it should no
longer be grayed out. Publish the form and choose personal folder library as
the folder to publish it to. Don't overwrite the existing business contact
form as that could cause problems. Instead, save it as a new form. You will
see the message class at the bottom of the window. Now you have a new
business contacts form that should run just fine. You can link it to whatever
folder you want too, which is nice because it allows for better integration
with other programs that look into traditional outlook folders but can't see
the business contacts folder. Hope this helps. If I could attach items, I'd
just attach the form I made with a sample custom field, but alas I can't. My
email address is mbow(removethisline)gren(andthisone)@egix.net . I'm paranoid
abou spam, can you tell? :)

I got the custom form to work, however, I get an error every time that says
it cannot open the form. I click ok and then it does open the form. I can
edit it and save it, but then it just gives the same error every time. So it
works, but not really. I think some of the cross-linking ability was lost as
well. One thing we may try is to create a new folder outside of the business
contacts folder but use the business contact form. There must be a way.
Possibly someone who knows code will have to solve this one though by editing
the form at the code level rather than using the built-in editor. Please post
any advancements on this topic. I ended up copying the original version of
the form back over my custom form because I got tired of the error messages
and all is well again.
