how can i get ie6 to pull up cached pages on hitting back button?

it takes way too long to load pages i've just been at when i click back. i
just want to go back to what i saw, not reload everything again. i changed
the temp internet file setting to "never check for newer versions of stored
pages" but it doesn't do anything. perhaps the website is overriding this
setting with some html command? i dunno, it's just been annoying me for a
LONG time and i finally decided to ask about it. thanks!

Not sure, but when was the last time you cleaned your cache/ TIF's? There is
a huge amount the TIF's can hold, and cache size is relatively small so as
to help speed things up. If it must search to the extent of it's ability
through a lot, it will slow things down.

Open Explorer>Windows> Temporary Internet Files> then expand Temporary
Internet files in the *Explorer* pane>Right-Click>properties of Content.IE5.
How many folders and files? What is its size in MB's? If it is huge, you
might wish to clean them out and start fresh.

My computer>control panel>IE Options> Delete files>delete all off-line
content>OK>OK out. DO NOT attempt to clean them any other way. e.g.
selectively going into Content.IE5 folder or it's sub-folders and deleting
files. You *will* probably end up corrupting the Index.dat file, and then
we'll have more to fix. There is a fix, but *don't* do that.

thanks, i had about 700 meg worth of files. it's quicker now, not
immediate, but certainly more bearable than it was.
for my test i've been using www.phonescoop.com and clicking on Phones in the
left pane, then selecting a manufacturer, then just clicking the back and
forward buttons.

That's a "goodly" figure. The cache should now have less to look through to
re-load what you want. Of course in the IE Options>settings> amount of disk
space to use> reset it if you like, to a more modest size. There have been
recommendations to what some feel is reasonable and works best. I've
forgotten what that figure is though. :-\ At any rate, inasmuch as I use
DSL, I haven't any need to keep huge volumes in there, and keep it cleaned
of stuff on a very regular basis. However, if you use dial-up, it is of some
benefit to have many of the pages you frequently visit stored in the TIF's.

OK...I'll try to remember that page if I want to do some tests in the
future. <BG>
