So the doctor says, "don't use any!"
<rim shot>

Not sure what you're asking to do here - are you talking about how not to
see emoticons in mail sent *to* you? If a sender is using HTML or Tich Text,
and puts in smileys and stationery and annoying embedded graphics and music,
you're going to see it.

You can set up Outlook to "read all standard mail in plain text" if you wish
(I've never tried this myself), but that may be an elephant gun to shoot a
mouse.

You could tell your most annoying senders that you would rather they sent
you plain text e-mail, too.

Not sure if I've answered your question, because I'm not sure what your
question actually *is*.

Outlook 2003 did not put any emoticons into Outlook 2003 except for the
simple ones you get when using Word as the email editor. If you have such a
pest as Hotbar installed, get rid of it immediately.

And if you're using Word as the email editor, ditto on the pest
statement.

I think you'll usually find that Word is the culprit, at least in
corporate environments. Drives my end users crazy too, although I'm
not sure what the difference is. You can manually edit the
"auto-format" entries in Word, but it's easier to just turn it off as
the email editor...

Of course, that's just my opinion, I've heard that some people
actually like Word.

Yes, Word will do that but the plusses of using Word (MUCH improved in
Office 2003) far outweight the minuses of the emoticon problem when using
internal email.

Of course, when sending to external recipients, common courtesy requires
that you use plain text, which removes the problem of emoticons,
winmail.dats, and a myriad of other problems. Let's not get started on
HTML, okay?

Ya, Word/Office 2003 is much better than prev versions, but the
average user doesn't need Word for email, anything more than rich text
is overkill, like so many features in the Office applications. And
the support issues magnify by a factor of about 10 when you throw Word
on top of Outlook... So many places too look... The emoticon
"problem" is not by any means why I called it a pest on the order of
Hotbar.

And YES, let's NOT get into HTML, I'd imagine we would actually agree
on that one ;-)
