How can I convert one column into many?

I want to paste some columns of text data from the clipboard into
Excel. The columns are aligned and separated by one or more spaces.

I know how to paste the data from the clipboard into one Excel column,
but how can I convert that to multiple columns?

I am aware that I can achieve my goal by reading the text from a file,
but I am looking for a way to simplify.

I am using Excel 97, but would like to know how convert one column to
multiple columns in other versions of Excel also.

Information will be appreciated,
