I have about 5 gigs of saved email messages on my hard drive.
How can I be sure that they are occupying the minimum amount of space?
Is there some way to compress them to remove space between the messages I
have deleted?

Assuming they are contained in pst files, accessible within OL; Compact them
(properties of the pst)

Thank you.
I do know how to get to the .pst file by drilling down through the
"Documents and Settings".
Is there a more direct way to access the .pst files?

I meant, within OL for properties of the pst.
If the particular pst is not visible in OL, then you have to open it, within
OL by
File>Open>Data File
Select properties, Advanced>Compact

PS I assume this is a unicode (OL2003 or higher pst) if you only have a
single saved pst of 5gb

Yes - it is OL 2003.
Thank you - I understand. This is a shorter way to access the .pst file.

Using Kernel for compact and compress PST package, user can now easily savetheir outlook mailbox information in a single or several files of small sizes. These compressed folders can be again decompressed by the PST file shrinking tool, when required by the user. The data structure and order of outlook PST files remain intact in the new compressed file created by this program. This tool can be downloaded from http://www.compactpst.com/
