I have a document in Microsoft Word that I need to change the file name. How
do I do this? I have it under "letter to Laurie Tovey" and want to change
it to
"Company Information Update".

In Word you can save a copy under a new name (File > Save As) and then go
delete the old one, but you don't use Word to rename a file.

Make sure you *don't* have the document open.
Select the document in Windows Explorer (My Computer, whatever)
Press F2

Type in your new name - do make sure that if the old name shows as Letter
etc .doc that you make the new name Company etc. .doc as well - and if the
old name doesn't end in .doc, the new name shouldn't either.

Press Enter.

You can't _change_ the name of a file while it is open.

Either use File>Save As to create a new copy with whatever name you wish,
then delete the original

or

_close_ the file and use a Windows Explorer window (or the File>Open dialog
box) to navigate to where the file is, right-click the file & choose Rename,
then type in the new name & press Enter.

Actually, as long as the file in question is closed, it's perfectly fine to
perform file operations (such as rename, copy, cut, paste, etc.) from the
Save As or Open dialog in Word (as well as most other Office applications).

Provided there are no createdate fields in the document, you can use Save As
as others have suggested, but the simple way is to rename it from one of the
file operations windows or from Windows Explorer while the doicument is
closed.
