How Can I Backup Categories?

I am running MS Outlook XP, Version: 2002 (10.6515.6735); Security Mode:
Default; SP Level: SP3.
I am having problems with Outlook, which *very* often stops with a Task
Manager message of "Not Responding" after it has half started (and downloaded
& deleted my e-mail messages from my ISP!) or after a few minutes of
operation.
I plan to uninstall and reinstall Outlook but do not want to lose all of my
personal categories.
How do I backup the categories to a safe location while the Outlook
directories are being deleted during the uninstall?
I would also like to use the same categories on my wife's PC -- is it
possible to move them there automatically? Thx.

Hi,
first read http://www.howto-outlook.com/Howto/backupandrestore.htm
your categories are stored in the registry

HKEY_Current_User\Software\Microsoft\Office\9.0\Outlook\Categories!

Can the categories be copied from the registry to another machine? I would
like to have a consistent set of categories to be use in my different
iterations of OL.

Hi Andreas,
I checked out the locations that you suggested and renewed my acquaintance
with manual and auto backups of my .pst files (my Backup and Franklin Covey
PlanPlus plugins will not remain set "on" - another reason that I plan to
reinstall Outlook). I also found the Outlook categories in the registry.
However, I would like to backup and restore the categories and move them to
another machine, hopefully in a manner a simple as copying the .pst files to
another name/location. I have no idea of how to manipulate the category
information stored in the registry, and expect that an Outlook uninstall
would delete all of the registry entries for Outlook, including the
categories. Would you please provide more precise info for myself and Joseph
McGuire? Thx.

yes you can import the key in the registry after reinstalling by
doubleclicking the exported *.reg Key.

Thanks Andreas -- just what the doctor ordered! This should help both myself
and Joseph McGuire.
