How can I avoid exiting Word when closing a file?

I have been upgraded to 2003 and now when I close a file in Word, the program
exits and I have to re-open Word each time. Any ideas on how to keep this
from happening each time? Thanks

How are you closing the file?

It sounds like you might prefer to have Windows in Taskbar turned off, so
that you get separate X buttons for Word documents and Word itself. Toos -
Options - View, remove the check next to Windows in Taskbar.

If you prefer a keyboard solution rather than a GUI solution, use Ctrl+F4
rather than Alt+F4 to close documents.

Was there a response to this? I'm trying to solve the same problem in Word
2007 ...

Hazel B,
You need to add the 'Close' command to your Quick Access Toolbar. Click on
the change qat button at the end of the qat toolbar, choose all commands,
browse for the close command and add it.
You can of course also use the old short-cut ctrl+f4 to close the window. Or
use the Office-button and choose close there.
