How can I arrange pictures by their resolution (width x height) insidea folder?

O

okari

I have a huge collection of pictures in various file sizes with
different quality and resolution. Im looking for a app that could
arrange these pictures in some logical way according to their height and
width so i could easily tell which ones of them to use as eg. wallpaper
pictures (1028x768, 1280x768, 1600x1200 etc.), which ones are more
suitable as web design pictures (320x240, 640x480 etc.) and which ones
to use for thumbnails (32x32 for example).

As far as i know WinXP is capable of arranging icons by picture
dimensions inside "My Pictures" -folder the same way it can sort files
by their Name, Type, Size and Date in Win9x. Unfortunately I run Win98
SE and I will not be able to change my operating system to anything else
at the moment.

Another solution besides "arranging pics app" would be a "searching pics
app" that could search my hard drive for pictures that meet certain
dimensions. I have already tested several commercial trial products of
the latter.. ACDSee mTools was one of them but sadly it missed some
search results all the time and because of its bloatwareous nature it
crashed every once in awhile.

Any (preferably freeware) suggestions of both type of applications are
welcome, thank you..

Complex problem.
Here, John Corliss might have an answer as he deals with large numbers of
pics.
Unless someone comes up with a better answer here. I think they could
answer it in alt.msdos or alt.msdos.batch. Doesn't mean they will have a
positive answer. It's the physical dimensions as you know that is the
killer.
Don't give up.

I thought this, too, at first. Then I tried it...

It will sort by size, but in the linux version at least, this refers to
filesize. There doesn't appear to be a way to sort by dimensions.

Of course, I could be wrong wrt the Windows version. It has a much
higher release number, IIRC (in linux, it's at v 1.50).

It may be a little further along, development-wise, in Win. Correct me
if I am wrong.

The Win version is 1.66 and allows to View by the Windows Explorer way
(list is better because it's easier to look at) and in the same View
drop-drop you can Arrange by: Name, etc, etc, size, Image size. Then
Ascending and Descending order respectively.
I have never had the need for it nor thought about until I had searched the
web and the thought occured to me after I hadn't found anything free.
Ya know, some of that commercial shit is alot of money. I'd rather buy a
six-pack.
[XnView. Freeware because we want YOU to never have to run out of beer.]

That's good, I guess. Hopefully this will find it's way over to "the
other side" in a future release. Thanks for the clarification, dszady.

Windows XP has this feature builtin. In Windows Explorer, browse to the
directory with the pics you want to sort by dimension. Right click on
the category headings (probably says something like Name, Type, Date
Modified, etc.) and choose More (at the bottom). Put a check by
Dimensions. Now you will have a Dimensions field that you can sort by.

Start > All Programs > Accessories > Windows Explorer > Views
Select Tiles and they are sorted by dimension automatically.
OP didn't have XP that's why XnView was suggested.
