I think that you're getting confused between formatting and the number
stored by Excel.
Formatting the time (eg) 1:15 as [mm] will display 75.
However, the value stored by Excel is still a date / time serial
number. In the case of 1:15, this serial number is 0.0520833333333333
and that represents the decimal proportion of 1 day.
If you want the number stored by Excel to be 75, then you need to
multiply by 24*60.
=A1*(24*60)
Format General
If A1 contains 1:15, the result will be 75 and that result will be
both displayed and stored as 75.
If you want a time of 1:15 displayed as "75 minutes" you could use the
custom format:
Yes, Norman's solution is correct, and do make sure you type the brackets.
Highlight the cell or cells you want to change.
Go to the Format menu
Click Cells
Click the Number tab
Choose Custom in the Category list
Enter [mm] in the Type field
Click OK
You should now see 75 minutes instead of 1:15.
