When I start windows xp home, I get a message that says there is some sort of
error in the hotkey utility, and it needs to close down. I close thatwindow,
and the computer seems to work fine. What is going on?

Thaks for responding. I tried your suggestion. Upon restart, got the same
error message about hotkey. I also got a message that the system was using
selective startup rather than normal, and that I needed to undo the change.
So I did. Any other suggestions you think would help?

Give that exact error message,
Try this for now :
+Click Start - Run
+Type msconfig
+Click OK
+Go to Startup tab
+Uncheck "hkcmd" if exist.
