Hot-plug IDE hard disks and CD-ROM drives?

Hi,

From time to time I have to plug an IDE drive (hard disk, DVD writer,
ZIP, ...) on my PC. The problem is, I usually have quite a lot of
programs running, so it's a pain to shut my PC down just for that (and
to shut it down again to remove it).
Is there a (PCI) IDE controller that allows hot-plugging any IDE
drive?
I'm running Windows 2000 pro on a one-year-old system.

NB: I'll have to buy an IDE card anyway since the motherboard's
controller already has its hands full with my four permanent IDE
devices.

Thanks for your advice :)

Best bet is to get one of the 3Ware or LSI Logic SATA RAID
controllers--they have the driver and firmware to support hot-plugging
and SATA is designed to allow it.

I don't think most IDE _drives_ are spec'd for hot plug, so the
controller isn't the only issue.

But isn't it possible for a controller to "simulate" a cold plug, i.e.
apply to the drive, when it's plugged, the same initialization that
the motherboard's controller does at boot time?

NB: I don't intend to plug more than one drive at the same time on the
controller.

You can disable the IDE channel then unplug. When you plug in enable the
channel again.

The problem is the MS IDE driver will not rescan devices and reset the ATA
modes.

The IDE connector is not designed to properly sequence the power
rails, so forget it.

Leaving aside the fact that this capability is part of the spec for
SATA, there are enclosures available that provide the proper sequencing.
Also, none of the WinWhatever OSs reset
or resense HDs other than at boot time, so forget it.

This is more of a driver issue than an OS issue.

Works ok in XP (if your careful), plug in then right-click My Computer
and choose manage. Open Device Manager, right-click your computer name
(right hand panel) - Scan for computer changes. Same thing if you
forget to turn on external modem before booting. To remove - choose
uninstall?

Does it handle CD-ROM/DVD-ROM drives?

Promise products generally dont.

I doubt its even viable mechanically since it goes in a 5" bay
and I cant see how a 5" drive can be used in one of those.
