HOSTS file somewhat fubar after SP2 update

Ok this is very strange.

I had set my HOSTS file to be "read only" and "hidden" to hopefully avoid
tampering by programs and spyware, but obviously that will not work.

I had backed up my hosts file prior to installing SP2, and after the
upgrade, even though I used the bundled pop up blocker, which i found is a
total joke, that microsoft also sell to non XP uses for $20 *sigh*

well, its been a week since i upgraded, and with pop up blocker enabled, I
have been bombarded by pop ups upon booting to my desktop and no matter how
often I ran AdAware Personal SE(not the free one either) I kept getting the
same VX2 malware installing over and over again.

I just looked at my HOSTS file on a whim and what do I see???

What really gets to me is that prior to SP2 update, my system was clean, no
spyware, no trojans, no media for them to hide in, no saved emails, nothing,
I also had created a NEW HOSTS file on a system I have that is NEVER
connected to the web for the purpose of having a PERFECTLY bug free copy of
windows running that I can use to copy clean versions of either virally
infected or corrupt files from.

well, SP2 really isnt much of an upgrade is it,

I cant even re install Battlefield 1942 anymore.

What really gets to me is that prior to SP2 update, my system was
clean, no spyware, no trojans, no media for them to hide in, no saved
emails, nothing, I also had created a NEW HOSTS file on a system I
have that is NEVER connected to the web for the purpose of having a
PERFECTLY bug free copy of windows running that I can use to copy
clean versions of either virally infected or corrupt files from.

The above entries appear to have been made by a spyware blocking program.

This has nothing to do with SP2.

Those entries in your host file were made by one of your anti-spyware/ad
programs. All of those sites are notorious for being full of ads and
spyware-- so by putting an entry that redirects them to 127.0.0.1, they are
effectively being blocked.

I've never seen spyware install itself. You generally need to actively
approve it (whether you are realizing it or not.)
