hosts file not working...

I've been trying for days and days, on and off, to get the hosts file
working. It will not block the banner ad. at the top of my ISP's home page
http://www.freeserve.com

I've fiddled and tweaked and picked up lots of odds and ends, (from
googling), such as if the lmhosts is unchecked in my DUN's advanced WINS
screen, then I should have an unhashed 127.0.0.1 localhost line only in
the hosts file, and not in the lmhosts file.
(I'm using the hosts file from the mvps.org site) .....it's in my etc
directory but, doesn't seem to be doing very much !!!

That banner ad. ,when I look at its' properties, seems to alternate between
spe.atdmt.com doubleclick.net and s0b.bluestreak.com
(I exit IE6 and clear cookies and TIF via right-clicking my big blue E /
properties {internet options} every tweak !!)

When I first started trying to get the hosts file working, I got a couple
of "content blocked" messages where the banner ad. would have appeared but,
they've not appeared since. I think this may have been Norton firewall
blocking them.

Someone in an IE6 browser NG suggested that I may be overdoing things, so I
removed the above mentioned domain names from my IE6 restricted sites zone,
and also removed them from my Norton firewalls' web list.

Could it be something to do with networking modules that I know very little
about, and perhaps don't need, or should have loaded....because mine is a
stand alone PC, not on a network, and I'm using DUN

any help desperately appreciated.

regards, Richard

why not download mozilla.org 'firefox' and use it
instead. popup blocker, good cookies blocker (tells you what
they are bad and good), download add-on ad blocker.
and if the banner ad is flash, it may be a bit harder to block

thanx ano ....within the past few minutes discovered that if i shove the
cookies slider in "privacy" right to the top, the banner ad. gets blocked,
I will be looking into Mozilla.
