hosting Win2k DNS & ZoneEdit

David D.

I'm slowly learning all this stuffs so be gentle :p

1. I'm hosting DNS for my domain on a Win2k server.

2. I've got ZoneEdit as my nameservers for my dynamic IP domain
(cry-freedom.com).

3. ZoneEdit nameservers are added into my DNS nameserver tab, allowing
zone transfers.

Question is.....how do I have DNS update when my IP changes (& thus
update ZoneEdit through the Zone transfers)?

You cannot host your own DNS if you have a dynamic IP. I believe ZoneEdit
does have a service for you to be able to host a website on a dynamic IP.

OK....maybe I'm lost here (wouldn't be the first time)

If I'm updating my DNS records (to reflect my external IP address) &
ZoneEdit is part of the nameservers for my AD...woulnd't they be
updated when my own DNS gets updated??

My domain name IS pointing to ZoneEdits nameservers....

SO..

External IP --> MY DNS --> ZoneEdit --> Internet

??

If you are behind a router you cannot do it this way. That is if your
machine has a private address that is NATed to you by a router.
If the public address is physically on your DC and you use only public
addresses in your network it may be possible but even then Authoritative
Public DNS servers must have a static address.
Furthermore if you are behind a router, you won't be able to connect to any
of your servers with a public address.

That being said, keep your public namespace completely separate on different
Nameservers. So let ZoneEdit host your public namespace and you host your
private namespace, DO NOT mix them.
Then all you need to do is let ZoneEdit, keep up with your changing IP
address. And in your DNS server have Zones that resolve your internal
address scheme.
If you want to host your own DNS you really need at minimum, two DNS
servers. One will host the public zone and one will host your private zone,
even then you still need someone else to host a public zone for you because
two public DNS servers are the minimum for public domain names. The best bet
is to let someone else host the public zone, at least until you have the
static IPs and enough hardware to split it up properly. Don't try to put it
all on one machine.
