host services error

Daniel

I started getting an error that says: "Generic Host Process for Win32
Services encountered a problem and needed to close." What does this mean?
How do I fix it?

First, be sure your antivirus software has the latest definitions and run a
virus scan.

Also, download, install and run Ad Aware:
www.lavasoftusa.com

If your system is clear of viruses and any malware, open Control Panel, open
Administrative Tools, open Event Viewer, look for
errors corresponding to the crash, double click the error, the information
contained within may give a clue as to the
source of the problem.

Assuming you have an XP CD and not a recovery CD, place the XP CD in the
drive, when the setup screen appears, select "Check System Compatibility,"
the report it generates may point to problem hardware or software on your
system. If you do not have an XP CD, you can download this application
known as the Upgrade Advisor from the following site:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/howtobuy/upgrading/advisor.asp
Note: If you have access to a broadband connection it might be best to
download using that as this is a rather large download.

Check for the latest drivers for your hardware, especially your graphics
card and soundcard and all peripherals connected to your system. No not use
Windows Update for this, go to the device manufacturer's web sites and if
you install updated drivers, ignore the message about drivers being unsigned
by Microsoft.

I ran the Upgrade Advisor after downloading it from the url you gave me. I
got this error: "Setup cannot continue because the version of Windows on
your computer is newer than the version on the CD." What does that mean? I
was also confused about why I should run Upgrade Advisor. I thought it
would only work on pre-XP Windows versions.

The message from the Upgrade Advisor is usually generated when the system on
which it is run has SP2 installed. Unless SP2 was integrated into the CD on
which you received XP and was not installed later, you can remove SP2 for
purposes of running the advisor. It's listed as Windows XP Service Pack 2
in Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel.

As to your question with regard to the advisor, it works on XP and if you
have applications and/or hardware with which there might be issues, it will
often pick them up. Note: in some case, such compatibility issues that it
might find can be fixed with updated drivers or patches to any specified
software. In others, such items might need to be replaced.

I just noticed you & I having same problem. Take a look at my post "Frequent
error on bootup" 4/8/2005. I just performed a fix "Smiley" suggested. So far
so good, but waiting to see if it holds since problem doesn't occur on every
bootup.
