Hi,
I want to upgrade from Home XP to Pro XP as I need IIS.

I am unable to get local information on upgrade pack in Chennai, India, as
the retailers are pushing OEM pack or Full Pack. Can I get OEM pack from the
retailer and do with it? Can any one highlight the disadvantages of this
idea? Can you suggest what I should do?

Disadvantages include:
-no support from ms
-can not upgrade to this
-it cant be moved to a new machine legally.
I would steer clear of that (except for new machines with prosp2oem
preinstalled.)
Try to order upgrade from MS directly.

Thanks Brian. Yet, can you explain more on moving onto new machine legally?
Also on pro Sp2 OEM installation.

Horsepucky. You mean to say it can't be moved to a new machine unless you
are willing to violate the EULA which you didn't get a chance to read before
purchasing and if you don't agree, you can't get your money back because
you've opened the shrink wrap. "Legally" has nothing to do with it. It's
copyright breach, a civil offence that MS doesn't have the balls to pursue.

I would steer clear of any machines with XP prosp2oem preinstalled.

What for? The OP can get a generic OEM in India and probably at a lower cost
than MS would offer.

They are some places in the world, that do not go buy the oem rules.
I don't know which county's that do not except one Canada*.
Depending on your county's laws you might be able to get an upgrade
oem xp pro. Microsoft claims they go by the county's laws.

I would just order the xp pro upgrade from a Microsoft office their.
Do you have a wal-mart store? So wal-mart may have xp pro-upgrade?

*A Canadian person told me, there laws allow oem versions to be sold
without hardware or any other requirement.

I called MS and they said they dropped that requirement last year but hadn't
updated their EULAs.

In Spain, it is almost impossible to buy anything but an OEM.

Thanx Greg,

OEM packs are being sold seperately in Chennai, India. However, they claim
that they don't. I had to run pillar to post to identify the upgrade pack.
Finally a retailer says 'yes' but with a great margin for him.

We do have a wal-mart store in Chennai, India.

Hi Alias,
Its just true. I think MS is not very serious about upgrade pack here in
India. I called up dozen people here for upgrade pack here. Its pity that
Microsoft India couldn't get the proper dealer in one shot. At last I found a
person, but the cost of upgrade pack is high with more margin for that
reseller. Most retailers are talking about OEM packs at $ 170 appx., which
makes us sick. Your point on EULA has been noted for knowledge.

An OEM version of XP Pro will not install as an upgrade over your
existing XP Home. You will have to do a "clean install" and then
reinstall all of your applications and restore your data files from
backups.

You can use the Files And Settings Transfer Wizard to expedite this
work, but it will still be pretty tedious compared to just installing
an upgrade version.

Good luck
