home to pro upgrade path$

I have both Pro and Home systems at my house and I purchased xp home for a
new system to realize the account management is substandard to Pro. With
that, I'd like to upgrade to Pro so I can define more than just Admin/User
accounts. ( I have an older son who is interested in software development and
needs PowerUser status but I'm not willing to give him Admin status.)

The only upgrade path I've found is the retail $199 Pro upgrade cost. Does
anyone know if there is a different upgrade path for users who already spent
$ for the Home version and are dissatisified with the Home product?

I'm sorry, but the only way to upgrade your retail Home Edition is with
a retail Pro upgrade.

You're not the first peson who has wished for a special cheaper Home to
Professional Upgrade package. Unfortunately there is none and your only
choice is the regular Upgrade version (or Full version, which costs even
more).

Actually you can get Full blown Win XP Pro or MCE in a single OEM pack
for $150 US or CND in various internet stores. In fact, for your $199
you can get Win XP MCE c/w Remote Control, and still have change to
help with shipping.

You're not shopping in the right places. You can find it for less at
many discount retail and on-line outlets.

There is no such "upgrade path." When WinXP was first released to the
public, in October of 2002, Microsoft did offer a special upgrade rate
for people who failed to research the differences between the two
version and found themselves needing to upgrade WinXP Home to WinXP Pro.
That offer lasted, if memory serves, about 6 months. WinXP is now a
mature OS, and consumers have had more than enough time to learn the
differences in the various WinXP versions.

But none of your suggested version can be used to upgrade WinXP Home,
as the OP wants; they can only replace it. Further, WinXP MCE requires
specialized hardware components that could easily out-strip the cost of
a WinXP Pro Upgrade license.

Thanks for the clarification; now I understand why MS makes so much money.
I'll install Fedora and introduce my son to open systems.

No, he's looking to do an upgrade. OEM versions can't do upgrades.

If you have a valid student or teacher ID, you can get XP Pro Upgrade
for $99.00 from Academic Superstore. But they do check IDs.
