Have a new HP desktop that came with Home. Using a Pro CD
to upgrade and followed your instructions (no anti-virus
or peri hardware). Windows shuts down due to sunkfilt.sys
file error: "the drive unloaded without cancelling pending
operations." It said it may help to disable BIOS memory
options such as caching or shadowing. Don't know how.
Any ideas?

You shouldnt need to do any of those options, install pro cd
restart computer, select boot to xp cd when the text appears
select,install xp,select new copy.This way it detects xp home,the
proceeds to format the hd deleting xp home. When it starts let it do al
functions,it will reboot, restart etc, just leave it alone till finished.

Thank you for your response. In following your
instructions, I was asked to select a partition to install
Pro. In selecting C, I was warned that it was not
recommended to install another OS in this partition.
Should I proceed anyway, or should I go back a step and
remove a partition, or do something else? Your
specificity will be appreciated.

No, do not install Windows XP Pro on the same partition as XP Home.
You'll need a third-party partitioning program to create a new partition.

A good third-party partitioning program is Partition Magic 8.
