I am having difficulty setting up my home network. My set up is windows XP
with a wired connection to a Netgear MR814V2 router and a Verizon DSL modem.
I have been able to reach the internet on several occassions. However, after
some period of time (sometimes minutes and sometimes hours) the connection
drops. At this time I am not able to ping the router (192.168.0.1). All
lights are fine on the router. If I connect directyly to the modem the
connection is fine. If I unplug the router for some time (several hours) and
try again I regain connectivity for some time again. Is there some
incompatibility between XP and this router that causes some settings to be
reset and lose connection?

XP has been updated with SP2 and the router has the most recent firmware.

Thanks

Jason,

This is a case where having more than one computer would make diagnosing the
problem hella easier. (or do you have another computer that you didn't mention,
and can you swap cable / router port with the other).

Try plugging the cable into another router port. Does the problem continue?

Can you buy another cable (it never hurts to have a spare). Or borrow a known
good cable from a friend.

Does the connection drop when you're actively using the computer? Or when it's
idle? If the latter, can you regain the connection by (assuming that you're
using DHCP):
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew

If the connection drops when you're idle, check power settings for the network
adapter on the computer. Make sure you're not allowing the network adapter to
power off when idle (Local Area Connection - Properties - Configure - Power
Management - "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power".

If no help so far, it may be time to call / contact Netgear Support. :-(

Cheers,
Chuck
Paranoia comes from experience - and is not necessarily a bad thing.
