Home network

I can't see a newsgroup for XP networking, hence my posting here.

We have an XP machine, connected to the internet on a cable modem. I just
added a second NIC to it, and linked that to a 98 machine with a
twisted-wire cable, to setup a small home network.

The NIC is installed fine, however, XP claims that the cable is unplugged.
However, if I use that cable to link from the other NIC - on either
machine - it works fine.

So what is going on? Why does XP tell me the cable is unplugged - sure it's
not talking to the cable modem, but I don't want it to!

Help! And everyone tells me HOW easy networking is with XP (I guess that's
why there's no XP networking newsgroup:))

TIA

Newgroup microsoft.public.windowsxp.network_web is where you should be
asking network related questions.

Given their low cost these days why don't you purchase a home
cable/dsl router? They are ideal for just this situation as you are
trying to configure with two network cards.

Good luck

Without using a router the cable to the second PC
MUST be a "crossover cable"
