I am wondering a few things. First, how do I change the network access from
"guest" to "classic." Second, how do I set a password for the guest account?
Third, what setting must I have to allow "\\computer name\c$" to be
functional? Thank you for your time.

Simon,

Do you have XP Pro? If you have XP Home, you're out of luck; XP Home won't do
any of this.

Check the Local Security Policies (Control Panel - Administrative Tools). Under
Local Policies - Security Options, look at "Network access: Sharing and security
model", and ensure it's set to "Classic - local users authenticate as
themselves".

On XP Pro, enable the Guest account, and set the Guest account password, using
the (Control Panel - Administrative Tools) Computer Management wizard. Under
Local Users and Groups - Users, you'll find the Guest account and the ability to
enable it, and to set its password.

Access to the C$ share requires administrative authorisation, which means
Guest-only access won't help. You'll need Classic authentication, and a common
account, with identical password, setup on each computer.

Simon,

Is this an XP Home or Pro system? XP Home is stuck with Simple File Sharing,
Guest only authentication, and the "C$" share is useless because it requires
administrative access.

On any XP Pro computer, check to see if Simple File Sharing (Control Panel -
Folder Options - View - Advanced settings) is enabled or disabled.

On XP Pro with SFS disabled, check the Local Security Policies (Control Panel -
Administrative Tools). Under Local Policies - Security Options, look at
"Network access: Sharing and security model", and ensure it's set to "Classic -
local users authenticate as themselves".

Set the Guest password with Start - Run - "control userpasswords2"; select
Guest, click Reset Password, and set the password of your choice.

On XP Pro, if you're going to use Guest authentication, check your Local
Security Policy (Control Panel - Administrative Tools) - User Rights Assignment,
on the XP Pro computer, and look at "Deny access to this computer from the
network". Make sure Guest is not in the list. Look at "Access this computer
from the network", and make sure that Everyone is in this list.

And Simon, if you just recently posted this query, please check the date on your
computer. It appears that the clock on your computer is off (slow) by a few
weeks.
