Home Network Win98 and WinXP Problem

D

Dennis

I have just run the Network Wizard of WinXP with SP2.
When I go to the Microsoft Network, it shows both
computers as present (the other is running Win98SE). But
when I try to look at what is on the Win98 computer I
get, after a very long wait the following message:
"\\<Name of computer> is not accessible. You might not
have permission to use this network resource. Contact
the administrator of this server to find out if you have
permissions. The network path was not found." On the
Win98 computer, it took forever before it said the
network was not available. I just checked the hardware,
which is two LinkSys ethernet cards connected to a
LinkSys EZXS55W 5 port Workgroup switch. Any suggestions
so I can get the old computer to connect to the new one?

Try:

1. On the XP machine, go to Control Panel\Security Center\Windows Firewall.
Make sure that the firewall is either disabled, or if enabled, click the
Exceptions tab and make sure the box for File and Printer sharing is
checked.

2. On the XP machine, Start/Run regedit ENTER. Navigate to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Remote
Computer\NameSpace\

Delete this key:

3. On the Win98 machine, make sure you have shared something.

Same here. Numerous attempts no deal. XP can't see 98 after Sp2, Removed
Sp2, hit restore point prior to SP2, now no network. 98 can't access net.

ideas?

Greg-
Go to www.careyholzman.com/netfixes.htm Follow the advice to the letter.
The suggestions helped me immensely. Somewhere in there I actually repaired
my problem. Sometimes it is hard to tell if they are talking about XP/ME/98
but you'll figure it out.
