home network via router

I recently bought 2 new Dell computers with WinXP Media Center addition. I
have a cable modem and use a Linksys BEFSR41 V.2 router. I can connect to
the internet via the router on both computers, but haven't been able to set
up a home network using the Network Setup Wizard. It worked fine for my
previous 2 computers that ran Win98SE. Do I need to upgrade the firmware for
the router or should I keep trying the Wizard? Thanks in advance for your
help!

The Wizard calls your router a "residential gateway". Specify that
connection option when the Wizard asks, and tell the Wizard to enable
file and printer sharing.

If there are firewall programs (Norton, McAfee, ZoneAlarm, PC-cillin,
etc) on the computers, configure them to allow access by other
computers on the local area network. Note that some antivirus
programs, such as Norton Antivirus 2006, include firewall components.

Thanks so much! The firewall I had was blocking it. It doesn't after I
disabled it.

You're welcome. There should be a way to enable the firewall and
configure it to allow access by the other computer on the local area
network.
