I noticed that one of the computers on my home network
could not find any of the other network files, so I
decided to fix it. Oops!!!

No, I cannot access the internet or the network with this
computer. It is an old PII 400 win98. The network is all
routed through a router with a direct connection to the
modem. I have another computer running win98se and a
third running XP home. These two are working fine.

I have tried deleting and re-installing the LAN card, and
reconfiguring the network setups, but no luck and I'm out
of ideas. I need this computer up by tomorrow morning due
to its user is the primary business type.

Any help will be appreciated!!

Ideas:
- when you started "fixing" things, what did you "fix"?
- do you get a response from ping when you ping out from this machine to
your working machines?
- do you gate a response on the working machines when you ping the
non-working machine?
- what are the error messages reported? Is there any indication that
the non-working machine thinks the LAN card is or is not working?
- have you tried re-starting the router (every couple of months or one
of my machines drops from network ... I've learned that power-off, wait
10 seconds, then power-on the router will restore it).

- I deleted a few of the "unused" network
protocols/clients/services
- no
- no
- There are no error messages. The LAN card is working
properly and the network has all three units for a
connection
- No. I'll give that a try. Thanks.

Resetting power supply for router didn't do it.

You need "Client for ms networks", "File & print sharing", "TCP/IP" and bind
the first 2 to TCP/IP.

I have done that already and it is not working. I have
noticed that if I disable my Firewall program on the '98
computer I am able to access the internet, but still
cannot find my network. I have run my internet and
network connection through this firewall in the past, but
now it blocks my internet although it is using the same
settings as before.

When I try to access my network, I get the little
flashlight in the window. I need to get this computer
back running and operational today. Please help!!

I think you should step back and go to basics. It's really going to be
impossible for us to debug it from here. You have the computers in
front of you. You know what is there (e.g. a firewall on the Win98
machine and that internet was THROUGH this box is new information). You
made it work. You can make it work again.

Go back to the XP box and re-set it up to expose network resources to
the network. Follow the instructions to the letter. Draw pictures of of
the hardware and software connections. Keep it simple.

I'm not telling you anything that you don't already know. But maybe
pointing you that way may help.

I'm using a router as a residential gateway. This serves
as the internet connection for all three computers. They
ALL have internet service, but the win98 computer can't
see the other two. It can't connect to the NETWORK. This
was my problem before, why I started messing with things.
