Home Network on XP Help

Chris Wills

This is probably a no brainer.

I have 2 machines networked through a netcomm modem router.

The home network used to work.

Now my machine will not see the network or its own share folder, the 2nd
machine does.

I was printing to the printer which is connected to the LPT port on the 2nd
machine and suddenly I could not print and the network seemed to have
disappeared.

I have run the home network wizard again several times still no network.

Can any body point me in the right direction.

TIA
Chris

I disabled the firewall on both machines, but I still can't even see my own
share folder?!

Chris,

Did you actually lose connectivity in the middle of a printing job? That's
indicative of a hardware failure. Can you think of anything else that you might
have done, at the same time?

We could look at logs from "browstat status" and "ipconfig /all", from each
computer, and maybe diagnose the problem. Read this article, and linked
articles, and follow instructions precisely (download browstat!):

CPSServ might be helpful here. Download PSTools (a free Microsoft product now)
to run CPSServ.

Hey Chuck,

Thanks for all that I will plow through it all now and get back to you.

The print job just refused to spool the printer works just fine if I attach
it directly to my machine.

When I ask to "view workgroup computers" there is nothing there.

Cheers,
Chris

Chris,

Printers are a lot of fun to work with. Client vs server, operating system,
make and model of printer, and how the printer is addressed are all variables
that affect usability.

If you're having a problem viewing the workgroup, you have a browser problem.
The printer job failing, after being started, is probably a driver problem.

Enjoy the reading, and let us know when you have questions.
