Hi.

Sharing a broadband connection and files (and performing rdc) amongst my 3
PCs at home was fine with cross-over cables.

But having now fitted a router to the broadband modem, and then the 3 PCs to
the router, the internet is shared but can no longer share files or connect
through remote desktop.

Would appreciate step by step help.

Thanks in advance,
Bhagat Singh

Hi there,

Before attempting to share files, check to see if you are able to ping the
computers in first place. The firewalls may be blocking the home network
traffic, therefore, in case you have sp2 installed on your XP computers,
then here is what you can do to configure the Windows firewall for home
network:

1. Click Start, run, type "firewall.cpl" (with out quotation marks) and
click OK.
2. In the resulting window, under the Advanced tab, place a check mark next
to the "Local area connection"
3. Click OK.

In case of Norton firewall and NIS, see here:

With regard to the remote desktop connection, go to the router settings page
and open ports for remote desktop connection program, TCP port 3389 needs to
be opened using the port forwarding, for more information, see here:

can you ping each other? if yes, what do you receive if using net view
\\remotepcname?

If your network addresses change when you installed the router, and it'd
providing DHCP, then you need to make sure that the IP/MASK/DGW are
properly set and any firewall you have on the machines allows the local
network traffic to work.

Using a cross-over cable or going through the switch doesn't change
anything - changing the IP/MASK/DGW does.
