home folder mapping problem

We're on a Windows Server 2003 single domain with XP/2000 workstations.

In active directory, I am telling each user's profile to connect drive G: to
\\SERVERNAME\USERS$\%username%

While on most of the workstations, the G: drive mapping is successful every
time. It seems on some Windows XP machines, the mapping is not successful.
The mapping shows up as just \\SERVERNAME\USERS$ SOMETIMES it works, and
sometimes it doesn't.

This is not a rights issue, since they can easly browse or create a shortcut
directly to their home folder.

From what I can tell, it is only XP machines that have this problem. Before
you ask, they all have SP2 and all the updates applied.

This problem is driving me bonkers so any ideas I would be greatful!

Thanks,
Jeff

Jeff,

This sort of problem ( logon script's mapped network drives not showing up,
etc. ) drove me nuts for a short period of time when WINXP Pro first came
out. It was a hassle. However, this is actually expected behavior due to
the way WINXP Pro 'does its thing'. Take a look at the following link:

Then, just for a bit more information, take a look at these two links:
