I have just recently noticed some new directories on our W2000 (SP3)
system - c:\Desktop C:\Start menu etc. They contain icons found on my
desktop. I tried to delete them, but the reappeared (now empty) when I
logged in. I lost half the icons from the desktop in doing so. They
reappeared when I restored C:\Desktop etc. It therefore appears that the
root of my home directory is now at C:\.

Can anybody explain this oddity and (more importantly) how to fix it?

I think you mean your "profile" directory, not your home directory.
If you go to a command prompt and type "set", what is the path you see for
"userprofile"? By default, this should be c:\documents and settings\username
.....
Any idea what happened just before you saw these folders?

Thanks. "Set" gives me USERPROFILE=C:\documents and settings\myusername.
Also, my HOMEPATH is down as C:\. I've just checked this on my WinXP
machine at home, and this gives me C:\documents and settings\myusername. I
therefore assume that my HOMEPATH of C:\ is wrong. How do I fix this?

Hi

1. Open "System" from the Control Panel.

2. Click "Advanced"->"Environment Variables".

3. Under "User variables for <user>",
- if there is an entry for HOMEPATH, change it to the path you want.
- if there is no entry for HOMEPATH, create a new one and put in
the path you want.

I've tried resetting my HOMEPATH. It changes the environment variable, but
it still uses C:\ as my "Home Path". Because Application Data has moved to
C:\, some of my programs don't work properly (eg Outlook reports various
files as missing.
