HLOOKUP Can't Search by Lookup Value

I'm coming across a problem searching using a formula as my LOOKUP
Value. e.g.

If my formula is:
=HLOOKUP(A1, B1:C10, 2, FALSE)

In one test where A1 = the date 2008/01/01 // HLOOKUP searches fine.

However, when A1 = a formula (i.e. =E1 or =today()) // HLOOKUP
reports #N/A.

If the range in which u r searching has the date as String and not as
Date then you will #N/A. If you enter the dates as dates, this will be
resolved

Is there a way to change the cell be a date and not a date-String. My
cell contains a reference (=E1) to another worksheet.
