History view in IE

T

Tim Brown

Windows 2000 Professional SP4
Windows Office XP
Internet Explorer 6

The History view in Internet Explorer 6 intermittently shows or does not
show the following:

By date
By site
By most visited
By order visited today

I have reinstalled IE and logged on as different users but it happens
whoever is logged on. Also when the History view does appear there are no
entries in any of the sections i.e. Today, Last week etc.

Can anyone tell me where IE keeps its history for the user by default as
there seem to be three different history folders?

Any ideas anyone?

The history information is stored in %UserProfile%\Local Settings\History.
That's one of those folders which has a special system-defined view, so it
appears to contain folders with names like this:

Last Week
Today

If you look at the folder with an application that doesn't subscribe to
the Explorer world view, it actually contains a single file named
desktop.ini and a subfolder named History.IE5 (may be IE6 in your case).
History.IE5 contains files desktop.ini and index.dat and folders with
names like this:

MSHist012004032220040329
MSHist012004032920040405
MSHist012004040520040412
MSHist012004041220040419
MSHist012004041920040426
MSHist012004042620040427

It's in those folders, and in index.dat, that the actual history data is
stored.

Thanks for letting me know where the default History folder is!

entries in any of the sections i.e. Today, Last week etc.

Any idea what might be causing this?

Is it possible that something is deleting the history folder contents so
that there is nothing to display at that point?

Hello Tim,

Thank you for posting here.

I have some suggestions for you:

Suggestion One: Safe Mode

To use a Safe Boot option, follow these steps:
Restart your computer, and when the Boot menu appears, press F8.
When the Windows Advanced Options menu appears, select an option, and then
press ENTER.
When the Boot menu appears again, with the words "Safe Mode" displayed in
red at the bottom, select the installation you want to start, and then
press ENTER.

Suggestion Two:

Did you install McAfee or other Anti-virus software? The same issue
occurred because McAfee blocks ActiveX.Therefore, I suggest you to disable
all the Anti-virus software and reboot your computer to check if the
history is working.

If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to let me
know. I am happy to be of assistance.

Thanks and regards,
Alex Zhang
