History List Disappears

Running IE 6.0 SP1a on Windows XP - a few days ago my
History started automatically deleting itself at an
unknown frequency. Tried: 1) sfc /scannow, 2) Windows
Update to reinstall IE 6.0 after Regedit to set IsInstall
to 0; didn't work. What's going on with this app?

Tools/Internet Options/Advance tab.
Under Security
Empty Temporary Internet files when closing.

Is this set?

Henri,
No, "Empty Temp Internet files when closing" is not set.
This is really an odd problem. The History persists for
varying lengths of time during a single browsing session -
sometimes it remains after closing the browser and then
reopening it. Sometimes the expanded lists disappear as
I hide/redisplay the History list. I am starting to
think this may be a virus or trojan. I just finshed
reinstalling in-place Windows XP; IE6.0 was fine to start
with - it accumulated links properly for perhaps 20
sites. I closed and then reopened and eveything was
still there. I think I hid the list and then redisplayed
and eveything was gone.
I cannot get Dell (Inspiron 8500) to help other than the
standard stuff and Microsoft has put up so many
roadblocks that I can't figure out who to contact. Any
more ideas? Thanks, John

John,
Possibly your History folder is corrupt:
[XP\2K]
Log on as Administrator and delete the desired <username> folder(s).

"C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\HISTORY"

I am starting to think this may be a virus or trojan.

Do you have a virus scanner? Actually a certain virus scanner
is known to interfere with History causing various symptoms.

Robert and Henri, Thanks for your attention. I disabled
McAfee 4.5.1 Corporate version scanner's ActiveX controls
and history is now retained. KB article 819257 was a
help but it is really a poor solution as vulnerability to
ActiveX programs is now present. John
