hilighting a word then deleting

I used to be able to highlight a word then type something over it, and it
would automatically delete that word and write whatever i needed. now it just
keeps that word and writes to left of it. or if i highligt it and press
backspace, it doesn't delete the word but only moves the cursor to the left
of the word. any ideas?

Probably you're in overwrite mode. Double click the OVR down on the bottom bar.

In Tools > Options > Edit, check the option "Typing replaces
selection". Somehow it became unchecked.
